Furniture Repair FAQ
Have a question? Below are clear answers about how we work, what to expect, and how to choose the right restoration approach.
Do you provide mobile service, or does the item need to be taken to your shop?
Yes — we perform all work that can be safely and effectively completed on-site. However, certain services, such as body-oil extraction, treatment from the reverse side of the leather, and extensive color restoration, require specialized equipment, extended processing time, and powerful ventilation to prevent indoor air contamination.
For these types of work, especially on large furniture pieces, we recommend transporting the item to our Craft Shop. On-site service is still possible for most projects, but shop service may provide safer conditions and better results for more complex restoration.
Why is restoring older furniture often better than replacing it?
Older furniture was generally built with heavier, stronger frames and thicker, higher-quality leather. Many newer furniture manufacturers reduce weight and production costs by using lighter wood, simplified frame construction, and thinner materials. These frames are less expensive to ship but are often more likely to loosen, crack, or break over time.
Modern leather may also be split into multiple layers so that several usable sheets can be produced from a single hide. This means the leather may be significantly thinner, and some furniture may use middle or lower layers rather than the strongest top-grain surface. These layers generally have less durability, strength, and resistance to wear.
Restoring an older piece is often less expensive than purchasing new furniture of comparable quality. It also allows clients to preserve furniture that has served their family for many years, update its appearance, and potentially pass it on to future generations.
For many clients, restoration is also an ethical decision. They prefer to repair a well-made piece rather than add more furniture to a landfill. Others do not want to purchase another leather sofa when the leather they already own can still be restored and used for many more years.
Is it worth restoring my leather chair or sofa instead of buying new?
In most cases, yes. Older furniture was often built with heavy, durable frames and thicker, higher-quality leather—materials that can be difficult and expensive to find in new furniture today. The frame represents a significant part of the piece’s value, and genuine leather is designed to be cleaned, repaired, recolored, and restored.
With proper restoration and care, a well-made leather chair or sofa can remain comfortable and attractive for decades. Restoring a quality older piece is often more economical than replacing it with new furniture of comparable construction and may also help preserve or increase its resale value.
How much does furniture restoration typically cost?
Furniture restoration typically costs between $90 and $450 per unit, depending on the type and extent of the damage. The final price may vary based on whether the piece needs reshaping, color restoration, scratch or damage repair, leather replacement, or partial reupholstery.
How long does the furniture restoration take?
Most on-site restoration services take approximately one to three hours. More complex work may be better completed at our Craft Shop, particularly when specialized treatments are required to achieve durable results or prevent chemical vapors from affecting the air inside the client’s home.
Some leather treatments must remain active for up to 24 hours and may require multiple applications to restore the leather and rebuild its protective finish. In these cases, the restoration may take several days. We always explain the recommended process and confirm the estimated completion time before starting.
Should the leather be repaired or replaced?
Not every damaged leather surface should be repaired. When the damage is extensive and the leather has begun to lose its collagen structure, replacement may be more cost-effective and provide a significantly longer-lasting result. In these cases, a cosmetic repair may only conceal the problem temporarily, and the damage can return within a few months.
At the same time, many upholstery shops recommend reupholstery even when the leather has only minor scratches, fading, or body-oil contamination that can be professionally removed. If the leather still retains its strength and collagen structure, it can often be fully restored without unnecessary replacement.
Because we specialize in both professional leather repair and upholstery, we can objectively evaluate both options. We will always provide an honest assessment and recommend the solution that offers the best combination of appearance, durability, and cost for your specific situation.
How is leather color restoration performed?
Leather color restoration is not comparable to painting a wall or applying ordinary paint to a solid surface. Leather is porous, flexible, and naturally breathable. The objective is not to create a thick film of paint on top, but to allow specially formulated color to bond with and penetrate the upper structure of the leather.
Proper penetration is important because leather naturally bends, stretches, and wears during use. When the correct products and application methods are used, normal wear does not immediately expose a sharply contrasting layer of the old color underneath.
Ordinary paint can block the pores, make the surface stiff, and prevent the leather from breathing properly. Over time, this may cause cracking, peeling, and deterioration. We frequently encounter furniture that was previously coated with unsuitable paint. Correcting this type of work is more expensive because the coating must be removed, and the upper leather surface underneath it may already be damaged.
Professional color restoration requires cleaning, preparation, repair of the leather surface, controlled color application, and restoration of the protective finish using materials specifically formulated for leather.
Why don’t you compete on the lowest price?
Many technicians provide only a surface-level touch-up without completing the preparation required for professional restoration. As a result, the finish may begin to crack or wear away within three to four months.
Durable restoration requires thorough preparation and, in some cases, treatment of both the surface and reverse side of the leather. These steps can take several hours, but they are essential for proper adhesion and long-lasting results. We do not skip critical procedures simply to reduce the price or complete the job faster.
What types of furniture damage can be repaired?
We repair scratches, fading, discoloration, worn areas, dryness, creasing, cuts, small tears, cat scratches, damaged seams, body-oil contamination, weakened protective finishes, and many other types of leather damage.
We can also reshape cushions, repair or replace support straps, reinforce frames, replace foam, restore color, fix peeling, replace individual leather panels, and perform partial or complete reupholstery.
The appropriate solution depends on whether the damage affects only the surface or whether the leather, cushioning, or frame has begun to lose its structural integrity. We evaluate the entire piece and recommend the repair that provides the most durable and cost-effective result.
How much material is needed for reupholstery?
The amount depends on the item’s size, construction, number of cushions, and material pattern. Approximate requirements:
Bar stool: 0.5–1 yard, or approximately 0.5 leather hide
Dining chair: 1–2 yards, or 0.5–1 leather hide
Armchair: 5–8 yards, or 2–3 leather hides
Recliner: 7–10 yards, or 3–4 leather hides
Loveseat: 10–18 yards, or 4–6 leather hides
Three-seat sofa: 15–25 yards, or 8–12 leather hides
Ottoman: 1–3 yards, or 1–2 leather hides
Leather requirements may vary because hides differ in size, usable area, and natural markings. Send us photos and approximate measurements, and we will calculate the required amount and provide an accurate material and labor estimate.
